Haifa Lifeguard Warns of Increased Drowning Risks During Bein HaMetzarim Period

The story · English

Adir Salman, a lifeguard from Haifa's municipal beach department who recently gained attention for rescuing two women from drowning, has issued a warning about heightened dangers at the sea during the Bein HaMetzarim period, particularly around Tisha B'Av. In an interview with Tal Meir, Salman explained that the sea becomes especially hazardous due to strong waves and exposed rip currents, posing significant risks to average swimmers.

Contrary to common belief, Salman noted that the calm and quiet areas of the sea are often the most dangerous because these are deeper zones where water flows back, creating strong currents. He advised swimmers to stay in areas with stronger waves, as these waves tend to push swimmers back toward the shore if caught in a current.

In case of distress, Salman emphasized the importance of remaining calm and reducing panic, which can accelerate drowning. He recommended floating on one's back, raising a hand, and waving to attract attention. According to him, nearly 90% of rescues at designated beaches are successful because victims receive immediate help before losing consciousness.

Salman urged swimmers to call for help loudly and splash water to signal distress. He highlighted the natural dangers of the sea and expressed his commitment to saving lives through his role as a lifeguard.
