Firework Strike Hits Delta Plane Approaching Chicago Amid US Independence Day Celebrations

During the US Independence Day celebrations, a Delta Air Lines aircraft approaching landing in Chicago was struck by a firework. The incident occurred on July 5, 2026, amid widespread fireworks displays across the United States. Despite the impact, the plane successfully completed its landing without injuries. The pilot reported feeling a strong hit and communicated the event to air traffic control in real time, stating, "A firework just hit us. We felt a strong impact." The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the incident.

Air traffic controllers noted multiple similar reports of fireworks interfering with aircraft in the Chicago area. One controller even remarked to another incoming Southwest Airlines flight, "Welcome to the war zone," highlighting the severity of the situation. At the time of the strike, the Delta plane was approximately 60 meters above ground, nearing touchdown.

Separately, Washington D.C. experienced the worst air quality among major global cities, attributed to an extensive fireworks display involving around 850,000 fireworks lasting about 40 minutes.
