Delta Airliner Struck by Fireworks During Chicago Midway Landing, No Injuries Reported

A Delta Air Lines flight was struck by fireworks while descending for landing at Chicago Midway Airport on Sunday evening, according to flight controller recordings and the airline's statement. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. local time during the approach of Flight 1076, when the pilot reported a strong impact believed to be caused by fireworks exploding near the aircraft at approximately 200 feet altitude. Despite the collision, the plane landed safely with no injuries to passengers or crew.

Following the event, air traffic controllers received multiple reports of similar incidents and directed the Delta crew to taxi to the gate for an inspection to ensure no damage was sustained. A Southwest Airlines flight approaching shortly after was warned by controllers with the remark, "Welcome to the war zone," highlighting the unusual hazard. Fireworks can reach heights between 50 and 1,200 feet depending on their type, which explains how they interfered with aircraft during landing.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident.
