American Airlines Pilot Reveals $458K Annual Salary, Sparking Online Debate

The pilot, reportedly stationed in Miami and flying Boeing aircraft, reportedly earns an annual salary of $458,000. This high figure is partly explained by an hourly wage of approximately $360, with captains of larger planes like the Boeing 777 or Airbus 350 earning up to $450 per flight hour.
According to aviation website Flyingmag, the average commercial pilot flies about 900 hours annually, or roughly 75 hours per month. U.S. federal regulations limit flight hours, accounting for rest periods, pre- and post-flight briefings, and seniority. In comparison, Israeli pilots reportedly earn monthly salaries ranging from 90,000 to 160,000 shekels for captains, depending on rank and experience, while first officers earn between 25,000 and 40,000 shekels.
The viral post sparked thousands of reactions, with many defending the high salary as justified given the responsibility of flying a plane at 35,000 feet. Some encouraged others to pursue pilot licenses, emphasizing the need for highly skilled professionals in the cockpit. However, others highlighted the less glamorous aspects of the job, such as demanding schedules, overnight hotel stays, delays, crowded airports, and daily passenger challenges.
