Saudi Delegation’s Controversial Attendance at Khamenei’s Funeral Sparks Regional Backlash

Despite Iran’s recent attacks on Saudi Arabia, a Saudi delegation attended the funeral of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei over the weekend, stirring controversy across the Gulf. The delegation, led by Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Walid al-Khariji, appeared in white robes, an unusual choice for a funeral and seen as a symbolic insult given white’s association with the rival Umayyad dynasty. This contrasted with the absence of delegations from the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, and others.

Saudi commentators criticized the low-ranking delegation and its festive attire, interpreting the gesture as a diplomatic slap disguised as condolence. Saudi analyst Ayman Deen described the white robes as inappropriate for a Shia funeral during a mourning period, calling the move "perhaps the most elegant slap ever given under the guise of diplomacy between two regional rivals."

Meanwhile, Emirati commentator Amjad Tah, close to Abu Dhabi’s leadership, condemned the Saudi presence, saying, "He bombs me and kills my children, and I’m supposed to mourn his filthy corpse? No, especially when even his son did not attend." The funeral in Tehran was intended by the regime to showcase national unity and strength, but many ordinary Iranians expressed frustration over the disruptions caused by the event, including road closures and work stoppages.

Social media users mocked the regime’s excessive funeral logistics, such as deploying 10,000 portable toilets along the procession route, highlighting the disconnect between the government and citizens. Opposition videos showed many Iranians leaving Tehran for vacations in the north, dancing amid traffic jams, signaling a rejection of the state’s orchestrated mourning.

The funeral thus revealed deep regional tensions and internal Iranian discontent, with Saudi Arabia’s unexpected attendance provoking sharp criticism from Gulf neighbors and Iranian citizens alike.
