Jordanian Ambassador to Israel Ends Tenure Without Successor Named

Jordanian Ambassador to Israel, Rasaan Al-Majali, will conclude his diplomatic mission and return to the Foreign Ministry in Amman on July 15, according to a royal decree approved by the Jordanian government. Al-Majali was appointed ambassador in 2018 and remained in Israel until November 2023, when he was recalled by Jordan's Foreign Ministry in protest against Israel's war in Gaza and the incident at Al-Maamouni Hospital in the Gaza Strip. Initially attributed to Israel, the hospital strike was later confirmed to have been caused by a rocket from Islamic Jihad. Since his recall, Al-Majali has stayed in Amman and has not returned to Israel, leaving the ambassador post officially vacant.

Similarly, Israel's ambassador to Jordan, Rogel Rahman, who presented his credentials before the October 7 massacre, has been in Israel since November 2023. This followed Jordan's decision to withdraw its ambassador and deny Rahman re-entry to Amman. In related diplomatic developments, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sought a meeting with King Abdullah of Jordan but was refused. Additionally, Jordan and Syria declined to deepen cooperation on drug enforcement and Druze separatism issues.
