Passenger Breaks Air India Plane Window Midflight, Could Face Airline Blacklist

During a domestic Air India flight, a passenger broke the outer layer of a plane window after handling it throughout the flight. After landing, he was handed over to security authorities, and the company said passengers were not endangered by the incident, but that it is considering placing him on a blacklist and barring him from flying in the future.

The unusual incident occurred on June 7 on flight AI1879 from Chandigarh to Delhi. According to reports, the passenger repeatedly tampered with the plane window despite repeated warnings from the cabin crew. After several verbal warnings, he was also given a written warning, until the inner layer cracked near landing. The crew immediately reported the damage to the captain and carried out an assessment during the flight. The aircraft continued on its route and landed in Delhi without any malfunction or safety risk.

It is important to note that the broken window was only the inner protective layer and, despite the seriousness of the act, there was no actual danger. In a statement issued by Air India after the incident, the airline said that upon landing the passenger was handed over to airport security personnel and the incident was reported to the authorities. The company also said the case was referred for internal review, which will determine whether the passenger should be classified as an “Unruly Passenger.” If the committee approves this, he could be included on a list banning future flights with Air India.

Aviation experts explained that aircraft windows are made up of several layers. The outer layer bears the loads and pressures during flight, while the inner layer serves as additional protection and to prevent scratches. Therefore, as noted, damage to the inner layer does not pose an immediate danger to the aircraft’s safety, but it is considered a serious safety and disciplinary incident.
