Waze Develops New Feature to Alert Israeli Drivers of GPS Disruptions Amid Conflict

Since the outbreak of the war on October 7, many drivers in Israel have faced significant GPS disruptions, with navigation apps erroneously relocating users to airports in Beirut or Amman. These deliberate GPS interferences have complicated daily travel, especially in unfamiliar areas. In response, Waze is developing a new feature designed to alert drivers about GPS signal disruptions along their routes.

The system works by detecting irregular "jumps" or inconsistencies in users' locations within the same area. When multiple drivers experience such anomalies, the app flags the zone as a GPS disruption hotspot and issues an early warning. This alert appears on the screen for 30 seconds once per trip, allowing drivers to plan alternative routes before reaching problematic areas.

Currently, this feature is in beta testing and is exclusively available to Waze users in Israel on both Android and iOS devices. Beta testers are asked to report the accuracy of alerts and note any unflagged disruptions. Waze aims to refine the tool to avoid false alarms and ensure responsiveness to dynamic conditions before a wider rollout.

While many beta features do not reach full release, the urgency caused by the war's impact on transportation suggests this tool could become essential for Israeli drivers. The company has not yet announced a timeline for general availability beyond the current testing phase.
