Jewish Oligarch Severely Injured in Nail Bomb Explosion in Monaco Residential Building

A targeted nail bomb explosion in a luxury residential building on Boulevard d’Italie in Monaco has left prominent Jewish-Ukrainian businessman Vadim Yermolayev and his family critically injured. The blast, which occurred near the French border, shattered Monaco’s reputation as a peaceful haven for the wealthy. Security footage showed a suspect placing a package in the building’s lobby before fleeing moments prior to the detonation.

Vadim Yermolayev, founder of the Alef corporation and a key figure in transforming the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, is also a leading philanthropist in the Jewish community. He and his partner, both in their 50s and 60s, were rushed to hospital in critical condition, while their 13-year-old son sustained less severe injuries. Monaco’s Attorney General, Stéphane Thébault, confirmed the explosion was deliberate, involving a device packed with nails and buckshot designed to maximize harm.

Monaco’s Minister of State, Christophe Mirmand, described the attack as unprecedented in the principality’s history. Authorities have yet to determine the motive or why Yermolayev’s residence was targeted. Yermolayev, who resides in Monaco, had recently been sanctioned by the Ukrainian government in December 2023 over alleged business ties to the alcohol industry in Russian-occupied Crimea. The suspect remains at large as Monaco and French police collaborate on the investigation. The Jewish community in Dnipro and worldwide is praying for the recovery of Yermolayev and his family.
