Goldknopf Sparks Heated Clash Over Torah Study Law in Knesset Committee

In a tense Knesset committee session on Tuesday, MK Yitzhak Goldknopf attempted to explain the spiritual background of the proposed Basic Law on Torah Study by delivering what he called a "Gemara lesson." He emphasized that the Torah was given to all Jews throughout generations, underscoring its status as a central national heritage. Goldknopf stated, "At Mount Sinai, all Israel stood together, including those here today, those in the past, and those in the future," highlighting the unity of the Jewish people in receiving the Torah.

However, his remarks quickly ignited a fierce confrontation with opposition MKs, who accused him of ignoring the military draft issue. MK Oded Forer from Yisrael Beiteinu interrupted Goldknopf, shouting accusations linking Torah study to draft evasion and criticizing the ultra-Orthodox community for wanting rights without obligations. Forer exclaimed, "Will your brothers go to war while you sit here? You are encouraging this heritage? Not this heritage!" Attempts by the committee chairman to restore order were met with continued interruptions.

Goldknopf then shifted to a historical comparison, expressing pain over Torah scholars being persecuted in Israel, despite the Jewish people's long history of suffering in exile. He questioned, "How is it that in the Knesset of Israel, Jews are arresting Jews?" Opposition MKs responded angrily, pointing out that police also arrest Jews and accusing some Torah students of draft evasion. Goldknopf retorted sharply, "There are draft evaders in Tel Aviv," highlighting tensions between secular and ultra-Orthodox communities.

The debate reflected deep divisions over the Basic Law on Torah Study, with opposition members vehemently opposing what they see as preferential treatment for yeshiva students, while supporters stress the law’s spiritual and national significance. The committee’s discussions are expected to continue amid ongoing political friction.
