Sharp Clash Erupts in Knesset Committee Over Basic Law on Torah Study
A heated confrontation broke out during a Knesset committee discussion on the proposed Basic Law: Torah Study, when Ayelet Hashahar Seidoff, chairwoman of the organization "Mothers on the Frontline," interrupted Knesset members, sparking turmoil in the room. Members of the Shas party, including MKs Yinon Azulai and Yossi Tayeb, sharply rebuked Seidoff, calling her a "poison machine" and demanding she leave the session. They accused her of spreading venom and incitement. MK Avichai Boaron also joined the criticism and ordered her removal, telling her to "spray poison elsewhere."
Later in the debate, MK Yossi Tayeb addressed criticisms against the bill, arguing that the public was being misled about its intentions. Tayeb, a former combat soldier with four brothers who served in combat roles, rejected claims that the law disrespects IDF soldiers, calling such accusations "distorted and false." He explained that the law aims to enshrine Torah study as a fundamental value, describing it as a vital commandment that has sustained the Jewish people throughout history, especially during times of war.
