Chabad Family Escapes Devastating Fire in Bellevue, Washington Home

Early on Saturday morning, June 27, a destructive fire engulfed the home of Rabbi Shalom and Chaya Elishvitz in Bellevue, Washington. The couple, who have served as Chabad emissaries in the area for 18 years, were awakened around 5 a.m. to find their house ablaze. At the time, seven camp counselors were staying in the home as the Elishvitz family had just completed the first week of their summer camp with 100 participants.

Rabbi Elishvitz quickly evacuated his family and then bravely re-entered the smoke-filled house to alert the counselors upstairs. When the stairway became impassable due to fire, the women jumped from second-floor windows. Miraculously, all escaped with only minor injuries. The house was completely destroyed by the flames.

Rabbi Mordechai Farkash, director of the nearby Eastside Torah Center, described the home as a welcoming place that hosted countless events and Shabbat meals over nearly two decades. He expressed shock at the loss but gratitude that everyone survived safely. The Elishvitz couple, who also run the MMSC Jewish school and a Montessori Jewish school in Seattle, lost all their possessions. Fire investigators suspect an electrical panel malfunction caused the blaze.

Rabbi Elishvitz suffered burns on his hands and smoke inhalation. The family and counselors are currently staying with colleagues while recovering. Despite the trauma, the summer camp continues as planned, with the counselors committed to the mission given by the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Rabbi Farkash pledged community support to help the family rebuild and emphasized that their work will carry on.
