Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz Likely to Recommend Clearing Elor Azaria’s Criminal Record

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz is reportedly inclined to recommend to President Isaac Herzog the deletion of the criminal record of former soldier Elor Azaria. This development comes a decade after Azaria killed a terrorist in Hebron. Katz has requested rapid assessments from IDF officials to support his recommendation, aiming to allow Azaria to resume a normal civilian life after serving his prison sentence years ago.

Azaria had applied to President Herzog in 2022 for the removal of his criminal record, but previous defense ministers avoided addressing the matter. Recently, Katz received a detailed personal letter from Azaria outlining the reasons for his request, which prompted the minister to act. In his letter, Azaria recounted his military service starting in July 2014, including roles as a combat soldier, communications operator, and sniper in the Kfir Brigade’s Shimshon Battalion, where he earned a battalion excellence certificate in 2015.

Azaria described the March 24, 2016 incident in Hebron when he neutralized a terrorist who attempted to stab an Israeli soldier during a crowded Purim celebration. He emphasized that although he served his prison term, the criminal record continues to hinder his civilian life, particularly in employment opportunities. Azaria, now married with two young children and living in central Israel, expressed hope that justice will finally be served with the deletion of his record, which he says has unfairly burdened him and his family for over ten years.
