Rising Streptococcal Infections Cause High Fever and Drooling in Israeli Children

Israeli doctors report a surge in streptococcal throat infections among young children, especially those in preschool. Parents have brought children exhibiting symptoms such as high fever reaching 40 to 41 degrees Celsius, red throats, loss of appetite, and excessive drooling. Dr. Adi Weiss-Pink, a pediatric specialist at Clalit Health Services, noted that while many cases are viral and self-resolving, there is a significant increase in bacterial streptococcal infections in children over age three, which require medical diagnosis and antibiotic treatment.

The infections are spreading primarily through saliva and close contact, common in daycare settings where hygiene is challenging. Dr. Weiss-Pink explained that untreated streptococcal infections can lead to serious complications, including abscesses in the throat that may require hospitalization and surgery, and in rare cases, rheumatic fever that damages joints and the heart. She emphasized the importance of medical evaluation for children with severe symptoms to prevent such outcomes.

Dr. Uri Nitzan, a family medicine expert and clinic director in Haifa, also confirmed the rise in streptococcal cases, highlighting the contagious nature of the bacteria within families and communities. He cautioned against indiscriminate antibiotic use without proper diagnosis, as many sore throats are viral. Both doctors urge parents to seek prompt medical care for children with high fever, throat pain, or drooling to ensure appropriate treatment and avoid complications.
