British Man Arrested in Ecuador for Alleged Murder of Woman in Colombia

Matthew Ashley Foster-Smith, a 46-year-old British citizen, was arrested at Quito International Airport in Ecuador on suspicion of murdering Natalia Villalba in Bogotá, Colombia. The arrest followed an international Interpol warrant issued at Colombia's request after Foster-Smith allegedly fled the country. Authorities say he killed Villalba, 36, on June 18 in her Bogotá apartment, concealed her body in a suitcase, and then escaped.

The suspect contacted the British newspaper The Sun a day before his arrest, claiming he was not involved and had been watching the England vs. Croatia World Cup match at an Irish pub during the time of the murder. However, authorities tracked his location through phone calls he made to the newspaper. Notably, England's first World Cup match took place on June 17 in Dallas, a day before the alleged killing.

Foster-Smith has a criminal record in the UK, including a 26-month prison sentence in 2023 for harassment offenses. Post-release, he was subject to strict police restrictions, including maintaining contact with authorities and bans on contacting victims or using certain communication devices. The mayor of Bogotá, Carlos Fernando Galán, noted that Dorset Police in the UK assisted in locating Foster-Smith. The British Foreign Office confirmed the arrest and is providing consular assistance. Dorset Police have not yet issued an official statement regarding the case.
