British Man Arrested in Ecuador for Alleged Murder of Woman in Colombia
Matthew Ashley Foster-Smith, a 46-year-old British citizen from Bournemouth, was arrested in Quito, Ecuador, on suspicion of murdering Natalia Vialba, 36, in Bogotá, Colombia. Authorities say Foster-Smith allegedly killed Vialba on June 18 in her apartment in the Chico neighborhood, then concealed her body in a suitcase and fled the scene. The Colombian prosecution issued an arrest warrant, and Interpol issued a red notice leading to his capture at Quito's international airport. The mayor of Bogotá, Carlos Fernando Galán, confirmed that Dorset Police in the UK assisted in locating Foster-Smith and vowed that "this painful case will not go unpunished." The British Foreign Office is providing consular support to Foster-Smith and is in contact with Ecuadorian authorities. A day before his arrest, Foster-Smith contacted The Sun newspaper, claiming innocence and stating he was watching an England World Cup match at an Irish bar and later shopping when the murder occurred. A subsequent call helped authorities pinpoint his location. This case follows a similar recent incident where a 46-year-old Australian man was detained in Bangkok for allegedly murdering a 17-year-old Thai girl, whose body was also found in a suitcase near a floating market in Pattaya.
