Joe Biden Launches Sharp Attack on Donald Trump in Maryland Speech

Two years after a pivotal televised debate that ended his presidential campaign, former U.S. President Joe Biden delivered a fierce and unprecedented critique of his successor, Donald Trump, during a Democratic fundraising event in Maryland. Biden, 83, who is currently undergoing treatment for prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, abandoned his usual measured tone to lambast Trump as a "loser," accusing him of blatant corruption and narcissism.

Biden's speech coincided with a public embarrassment for the Trump administration amid the 250th anniversary celebrations of American independence. Trump had inaugurated the "Great American State Fair" on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., an event intended to showcase all U.S. states and territories. However, the event suffered from low attendance, empty booths, and a largely unused Ferris wheel. Several states, particularly those led by Democratic governors, declined to send official delegations due to costs and political tensions, resulting in minimal and poorly presented exhibits.

Biden also criticized the Trump administration's costly and flawed renovation of the Reflecting Pool, a project awarded without a competitive bid to a Trump donor's company, which quickly deteriorated due to algae and peeling paint. He condemned Trump's actions as part of a broader pattern of self-aggrandizing projects, including plans to demolish the White House's East Wing for a ballroom, naming the Kennedy Center after himself, and erecting a triumphal arch.

Further, Biden accused the Trump administration of unprecedented systemic corruption, referencing reports of Trump earning billions since leaving office and alleged plans to compensate January 6 Capitol rioters with taxpayer money. Biden insisted that those involved in the Capitol attack deserved long prison sentences rather than compensation.

Within the Democratic Party, Biden's return to the spotlight and his harsh rhetoric have elicited mixed reactions, with some party members frustrated by the previous election management and advocating for new leadership. Meanwhile, efforts to shape the Biden family legacy have sparked internal tensions, including criticism of First Lady Jill Biden's promotional tour for her memoir and controversy surrounding Hunter Biden's public comments on his presidential pardon.
