Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced on Saturday that he will resign from his position within the coming weeks, paving the way for early elections. Vučić did not specify the exact date of his resignation or whether the upcoming elections will be for the parliament or a new presidential vote. He is currently serving his second term and, according to Serbian election law, is ineligible to run for a third term.

Vučić made the announcement during a rally in central Belgrade, addressing thousands of his supporters. He stated, "I will remain president for a few more weeks and then submit my resignation." He also pledged to support the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in the upcoming elections, expressing confidence that the party will win convincingly. Vučić hinted that this might be his final address to supporters as president.

The resignation comes amid ongoing student protests that have lasted over a year, sparked by a tragic train station accident in November 2024 that killed 16 people. The protests demand government accountability, criticizing the administration for corruption and authoritarian tendencies. Vučić's government has responded with a heavy-handed approach, including hundreds of arrests and accusations against Serbian police of excessive force and arbitrary detentions.

Previously, there was speculation that Vučić might seek the prime minister position, which holds greater power, but no confirmation has been made. The political developments mark a significant moment in Serbia's turbulent political landscape as the country prepares for a potential shift in leadership.
