Israel and US Block Palestinian Bid for UN General Assembly Presidency

Israel and the United States coordinated a diplomatic campaign to prevent Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour from being elected president of the United Nations General Assembly. The effort, which began in early 2025, involved persuading other countries to nominate candidates to reduce Mansour's chances and applying significant pressure on the Palestinian Authority through threats of budget cuts and sanctions.

Mansour announced his candidacy in March 2025, aiming for the second most influential position in the UN, which carries extensive powers and would have elevated the Palestinians' political status. Israel identified the political implications early and worked diplomatically with various nations to ensure Mansour would not run unopposed. Cyprus and Bangladesh later entered candidates into the race, further complicating Mansour's path.

Despite Mansour's refusal to withdraw initially, the US warned Ramallah of severe consequences, including financial sanctions and visa cancellations for Palestinian officials. After sustained diplomatic pressure, Mansour withdrew his candidacy in February 2026. He also attempted to run for the deputy president role but was similarly blocked through American diplomatic measures.

The Bangladeshi candidate was ultimately elected president of the General Assembly earlier in June 2026, marking a significant diplomatic victory for Israel and the US in preventing a Palestinian upgrade in international status at the UN. Israeli officials described the outcome as a major success achieved through discreet and persistent diplomatic efforts.
