Jewish Leaders Visit Dublin Amid Surge in Antisemitic Incidents

Leaders representing seven major Jewish communities worldwide convened in Dublin for an emergency visit to address a significant rise in antisemitic incidents in Ireland. The delegation, part of the J7 organization which represents over 90% of global Jewry, arrived Tuesday to express solidarity with the local Jewish community, which has experienced an unprecedented wave of hostility. The group held a public rally in Herbert Park and met with local government officials.

During the rally, Maurice Cohen, Chairman of the Representative Council of Irish Jewry, revealed alarming statistics: 143 antisemitic incidents were recorded in Ireland between July 2025 and January 2026 alone. Cohen described this number as disproportionate and deeply concerning for a community of only about 2,200 people. He also criticized attempts to rename the park, which honors former Israeli President Chaim Herzog, a Belfast native who grew up in Dublin, viewing it as part of a hostile trend forcing Irish Jews to choose between their identities.

Cohen demanded practical security measures and courageous political leadership to halt incitement, stating, "We don't need worried statements on paper, but practical security measures on the ground and brave political leadership that will stop the incitement." Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), read a joint statement highlighting that 2025 was the deadliest year for Diaspora Jews in three decades, with 20 victims of antisemitic violence. He argued that hostile and anti-Israel rhetoric in Ireland creates a toxic environment directly impacting the personal safety of community members.

Given the severity of the situation, J7 decided to dedicate a special analysis to Ireland in its upcoming annual report, despite Ireland not being one of the organization's seven permanent member states. The delegation presented a list of operational demands to Irish officials, including dedicated security budgets for Jewish institutions and schools, uncompromising legal enforcement against hate crimes, and a call for public figures and opinion leaders to avoid demonizing rhetoric against Jews. Greenblatt concluded the visit with a stark warning to the Irish government, urging them not to wait for a tragedy before taking action.
