Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary-General Mohsen Rezaei stated on Sunday that the United States' response to Tehran's conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz was "insufficient." Iran had presented a proposal during the UN General Assembly suggesting the strait could be reopened and maritime traffic resumed within seven days if its conditions were met. The US later responded to this proposal through Qatari intermediaries.
Rezaei emphasized that Washington needs to clarify ambiguous points for Tehran, stating, "We presented seven conditions to the Americans and clearly announced that the Strait of Hormuz will not be opened to them, and no negotiations will take place until these conditions are met." He added that Iran is "no longer in the stage of responding to the Americans." Rezaei noted that the US response accepted some of Iran's conditions while others remained unclear. The White House has not yet responded to a Reuters request for comment.
Tehran announced in late September that it had received an American response to its latest proposals for reviving a ceasefire, days after US President Donald Trump announced he had rejected it. Qatar and other mediators have been relaying messages between Washington and Tehran in an effort to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which previously handled one-fifth of global oil and LNG supplies before a war that began in late February with American and Israeli attacks on Iran.
