A Russian missile strike on the city of Pryluky in northern Ukraine's Chernihiv region killed 22 civilians, including five children, and damaged hundreds of homes. The Federation of Jewish Communities in Ukraine (FJCU) reported that two apartments belonging to Jewish families in the city were significantly damaged by the blast wave. However, the residents of these apartments were unharmed, with one family not being home at the time of the attack and another resident being in the apartment but sustaining no injuries.
Chabad emissary and chief rabbi of Chernihiv, Rabbi Israel Silverstein, who also oversees Pryluky, informed the FJCU of the extensive damage to the Jewish families' residences. Pryluky, a city of approximately 55,000 residents, currently has about 250 Jewish inhabitants. Historically, the city had a large Jewish population, numbering around 8,000 in 1900, constituting about 30% of the total population. A makeshift synagogue operated there until 1977.
The FJCU stated that Ukrainian civilians are paying the price of the war and Russian terror daily. The federation recalled a recent incident two weeks prior where a teenager with Israeli citizenship was killed in Kyiv, and synagogues and cemeteries were damaged by direct hits. The FJCU is preparing for a difficult winter and praying for peace and redemption.
