Indian Captain Hailed as Hero After Foiling Dubai Flight Incident

Indian media is focusing on Captain Smit Macher, who was injured during a dramatic incident on a Flydubai flight, portraying him as a hero who fought in the cockpit to prevent a disaster or hijacking. The Times of India reported, citing Israeli sources, that Macher struggled with the co-pilot, who allegedly attempted to take control of the aircraft. The Indian publication The Week also described Macher as a "Hero Indian captain," noting he continued to fight despite his injuries.

Macher, an Indian national, has been a captain with Flydubai's Boeing 737 fleet since June 2022. Prior to this, he spent 11 years with SpiceJet, reaching the rank of training captain and accumulating approximately 9,750 flight hours. Some Indian media reports highlighted the moment the cockpit door opened, allowing passengers and other crew members to intervene, though it was not officially confirmed if Macher himself opened the door.

Passenger accounts described shouting from the cockpit, followed by an open door and blood. Reports suggest that passengers and off-duty pilots on board managed to regain control and stabilize the aircraft. A video shared by NDTV shows the injured pilot, with one passenger telling him, "You saved the plane." Another passenger was heard saying, "They attacked us... we took control."

The flight experienced a rapid loss of altitude, dropping over 14,000 feet, and initially transmitted an emergency code 7700, followed by code 7500, indicating unlawful interference or a suspected hijacking. The aircraft eventually landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The incident involved passengers, two off-duty pilots, and a dentist who provided initial medical aid to the injured captain.
