Navitas and Eco Atlantic Secure Stake in South African Gas Block
The South African government has approved the entry of Israeli energy company Navitas into Block 1 CBK, a vast offshore area totaling nearly 20,000 sq km adjacent to the Namibian maritime border. Navitas will operate the block with a 37.5% stake, sharing it with Eco Atlantic, which holds an equal share. Local partner OrangeBasin Energies holds the remaining 25%. There is also an option that could increase Navitas and Eco Atlantic's stakes to 47.5% each in the future.
This move marks a new frontier for Navitas, following its progress in the Americas and the Falkland Islands. While currently in the licensing and assessment phase, Block 1 CBK is situated at the southern edge of a region where significant oil discoveries have been made in recent years, comparable to those in Guyana. Initial interpretations of seismic data by Navitas and Eco Atlantic suggest a potential gas discovery of 4.5 trillion cubic feet (TCF), equivalent to 750 million barrels of oil, along with significant condensate resources. While oil estimates for the block itself are pending, surrounding projects and licenses are estimated to hold around 3.6 billion barrels.
The potential discovery holds strategic importance for South Africa, which has become increasingly reliant on imported refined petroleum products due to a significant reduction in its domestic refining capacity. The government has emphasized the need for energy security, linking it directly to national stability. If commercial discoveries are made in the Orange Basin, they could address both economic and strategic energy needs for the nation.
The Orange Basin is a large geological basin spanning the maritime border between Namibia and South Africa. Recent years have seen major discoveries in the Namibian portion, attracting global energy firms and sparking interest in the region as a potential new oil and gas hub. Navitas and Eco Atlantic's Block 1 CBK is strategically located near recent discoveries, including Shell's Merlin-1X, approximately 70 km away, and other significant finds like TotalEnergies' Venus and Galp's Mopane.
Historical drilling within Block 1 CBK has already confirmed a gas system, with one test yielding a flow of 32.4 million cubic feet per day, alongside indications of oil. The estimated 4.5 TCF of prospective gas resources, along with potential condensate, makes gas the most tangible asset in the block currently. The existing data, including extensive seismic surveys and historical well information, provides a solid foundation for Navitas's exploration strategy, which is characterized by low risk and opportunistic thinking.
