"Avengers: Endgame" has returned to cinemas worldwide in a special re-release titled "Endgame: Encore," grossing an estimated $86 million globally during its opening weekend. The original film remains central, but the new version includes additional scenes connecting it to upcoming installments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the United States and Canada, the re-release brought in $26 million, with an additional $60 million generated from international markets. The film was shown in over 3,000 theaters, including upgraded auditoriums with enhanced sound and visuals, which accounted for approximately 52% of the weekend's revenue.
The "Endgame: Encore" edition features exclusive content and a sneak peek at "The Avengers: The Kang Dynasty," the next film in the series. This re-release capitalizes on the original film's status as the conclusion to a long-running narrative and its immense box office success in 2019. The added material aims to engage audiences by providing a bridge to future storylines, including Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the Marvel universe in a new role as Doctor Doom.
This successful comeback positions "Endgame" to potentially reclaim the title of the highest-grossing film of all time. Its cumulative gross has now reached approximately $2.885 billion, narrowing the gap with "Avatar" to about $39 million. Disney reports this as the second-highest global opening for a re-released film, surpassing previous re-release successes like "Avatar" and "Titanic." The strong performance highlights the profitability of re-releasing popular older films, especially when coupled with previews for new releases.
Meanwhile, advance ticket sales for "The Avengers: The Kang Dynasty," slated for release in December, have already surpassed $50 million, indicating strong audience anticipation. The "Endgame" re-release also marks the third-highest opening weekend for a returning film in the U.S., contributing to a robust summer for Hollywood cinema.
