About 15 IDF observation trainees suffer heatstroke in the Negev

The story · English

About 15 soldiers in an IDF course for commanders of observation centers reportedly suffered heatstroke and dehydration symptoms after field activity and shooting drills in severe heat at the Sdei Yaron base in the Negev. According to the soldiers and their parents, they were kept in the exercise despite the harsh conditions, and some later felt so unwell that they fainted or vomited.

Parents told Galei Tzahal that this was not the first such incident at the same base, saying a similar case occurred there about six months ago during basic training. They said the number of soldiers showing dehydration symptoms kept rising, and several were concentrated in a sick room after the drill.

The parents also claimed the shooting exercise took place at temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius and that many of the female soldiers were showing signs of severe dehydration after the activity. The report says the episode happened after the trainees had taken part in field exercises in heavy heat.

The IDF Spokesperson said that over the weekend several soldiers sought medical treatment after feeling unwell and reporting dehydration symptoms. It added that all of the soldiers received initial treatment at the base, were sent to rest in their unit, are being monitored by the unit doctor, and continue to receive medical care as needed.
