CNBC Criticized for 'Insensitive' Post Referencing Six Million

The story · English

American financial news network CNBC sparked outrage after posting "six million" in English on social media platform X, intended to highlight Saudi Arabia's oil exports reaching six million barrels per day in September. The isolated number, used without context as a promotional hook for an economic report, was widely perceived as extremely careless and deeply offensive to the memory of Holocaust victims.

Far-right and far-left activists, trolls, and Holocaust deniers exploited the post, flooding the discussion with mockery and conspiracy theories questioning the scale of the Jewish genocide. Some users distorted historical facts, claiming the number of victims was only around 271,000, while others suggested the number was a "code for something."

Many users sharply criticized CNBC for its lack of sensitivity, arguing that such a post was bound to attract hate speech and antisemitism. They rejected the idea that the post was an innocent mistake, with some stating, "There's no way this is accidental, come on."

The incident is particularly notable given CNBC's focus on finance and economics, and its classification by media watchdogs as a centrist or slightly left-leaning organization. The post remained online for hours before being removed by the network on Tuesday afternoon, Israel time.
