The story · English

Miki Koppel, a sponsor for Maccabi Tel Aviv and the Referees Association, issued an apology on Friday for his recent remarks concerning fans of rival club Hapoel Tel Aviv. Koppel clarified his statements via Twitter, expressing regret to any fan who felt offended by his words, particularly those who do not partake in chants involving the Holocaust, slander, or incitement.

Koppel stated his apology is sincere and stems from respect and love for sports and its participants. He urged listeners to consider his full remarks, which he claims were selectively edited into a short video clip that misrepresented his overall sentiment. He emphasized that he had previously praised Hapoel's passionate fan base and their dedication, even during their time in the lower National League.

He reiterated his consistent stance against offensive chants, specifically mentioning a past "rape chant" and calls of "terrorist" directed at player Salim Tuama, whom he defended. Koppel also highlighted his positive relationships with figures associated with Hapoel, such as Pini Balili and Doron Osidon, and his many friends who support the club. He believes that while sports rivalries should be intense and spirited, they must have boundaries.

Koppel drew a firm line, stating that groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, the Holocaust, and terrorism have no place in sports stadiums or fan culture, especially given the current sensitive period. He advocated for maintaining respect and recognizing shared humanity and national identity after the 90 minutes of competition.

The controversy originated from a video clip circulating on social media, which was amplified by Hapoel fans. In the clip, Koppel expressed intense animosity towards Hapoel Tel Aviv, stating, "I hate Hapoel Tel Aviv. Record me. Professional only? No! I hate. Just football? No. Hate. As long as they sing 'May there be a Holocaust for Maccabi Tel Aviv,' as long as they throw balls during the game. As long as I'm afraid to leave my parking spot for a youth game in Wolfson because I know I might not return home, I hate them with a deathly hate."
