Lafata Community Denounces Killing of Fatima Al-Rajabi, Affirms Innocence
Elders and residents of the Palestinian town of Lafata, encompassing areas in Ramallah, Al-Bireh, Jerusalem, and the diaspora, have issued a strong condemnation of the murder of Fatima Al-Rajabi, referred to as 'Umm Raji,' and the subsequent concealment of her body. They expressed solidarity with her family and praised the Al-Rajabi Al-Rifai family's wise and restrained response to the tragedy.
A statement released by the community leaders indicated that Lafata's residents held consultations regarding the incident's repercussions. They acknowledged the Al-Rajabi family's patience and sense of responsibility, noting that their approach helped prevent wider conflict and preserve civil peace and the sanctity of life.
The statement emphatically declared the full innocence of Lafata's elders, residents, and the Othman family from the perpetrator of the crime, regardless of their identity or motives. They stressed that responsibility lies solely with the individual perpetrator and that the crime cannot be justified, concealed, or downplayed under any pretext. The community affirmed that the victim's honor, dignity, and her family's rights must be protected, rejecting any attempt to associate the crime with the family or town name generally.
Referencing the Quranic principle, "No bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another," the statement clarified that criminal responsibility does not extend to those who did not commit the act. It further explained that Lafata is an ancient Palestinian town in Jerusalem, home to multiple families and clans, and its name represents a place, history, and memory, not a specific family. Therefore, the statement argued, it is inappropriate to conflate the town and its people with the actions of an individual.
The elders and residents of Lafata, along with the Othman family, extended their condolences to Al-Rajabi's husband, children, and relatives, as well as to the Al-Rajabi Al-Rifai and Al-Shehadeh families, and the people of Jerusalem and Palestine, stating that the family's loss is a pain felt by the town's residents. They reiterated their support for the Al-Rajabi Al-Rifai and Al-Shehadeh families, emphasizing that the bonds within their community are stronger than an individual crime. They called for wisdom, justice, and the preservation of life to maintain everyone's dignity and civil peace.
The statement concluded by reaffirming their rejection of the crime, stating, "Injustice does not become right through kinship, and a crime does not become acceptable in the name of the family, and the sanctity of forbidden blood is not lifted by any excuse." They prayed for mercy for Fatima Al-Rajabi and for patience and steadfastness for her family.
