Shabbat Shuva: A Solemn Call for Repentance Before Yom Kippur

תורגם ותומצת מתוך Channel 9 על ידי baba
The story · English

The Sabbath between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, known as Shabbat Shuva or the "Sabbath of Return," holds unique spiritual significance in the Jewish calendar. Its name derives from the opening words of the Haftarah reading from the Book of Hosea, "Shuva, Israel" ("Return, Israel"). Ashkenazi Jews add passages from the prophet Joel, while Sephardi Jews include readings from the prophet Micah. The Hebrew word "Shuva" shares a root with "Teshuvah," meaning repentance, underscoring the central theme of these days.

Among the approximately ten named Sabbaths in the Jewish year, Shabbat Shuva is considered the most emotionally and spiritually charged. Historically, many communities observed a tradition where the rabbi would deliver an extensive sermon, or "drashah," only twice a year: on Shabbat Shuva and on Shabbat HaGadol, the Sabbath before Passover. For the other fifty weeks, sermons were limited to the prescribed weekly readings. Rabbis would prepare for months for the Shabbat Shuva address, recognizing it as a rare opportunity to openly discuss communal sins and the path to atonement.

This year, Shabbat Shuva falls on September 19th, just under 24 hours before the commencement of Yom Kippur. This timing marks a final opportunity and a crucial moment for a profound dialogue with the community, shifting from the regular cycle of religious services to a period dedicated to introspection and spiritual correction.
