IDF Prepares for Yom Kippur Amid Multiple Security Fronts

The story · English

The Israeli military is bolstering defenses across all fronts and branches in anticipation of Yom Kippur, following directives from IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir. The Air Force is increasing the number of armed aircraft, while the Navy is deploying more missile ships and enhancing routine security patrols. Reinforcement units have also been added to the Northern, Southern, and Central commands.

In parallel, security forces are investigating several individuals for security offenses. A 32-year-old resident of Majd al-Krum faces charges for allegedly communicating with a foreign agent from Lebanon and carrying out security missions under her direction. Separately, a 31-year-old resident of Tamra is accused of attempting to secretly aid Hamas's military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, and of contacting Iranian intelligence before his arrest.

Meanwhile, a senior Fatah official, Soufian Abu Zeida, revealed he was the source who warned Israel of an impending large-scale attack by Yahya Sinwar, Hamas's leader in Gaza. Abu Zeida stated he would soon share details about a message Sinwar asked him to convey to the Israeli side, confirming he was the "Coalition Eyes" informant who passed the message to the Shin Bet in September 2023.

In international news, Russia and China vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that would have extended the mandate of experts monitoring sanctions against Iran. The sanctions, which include asset freezes and arms transaction bans, remain in effect but will be harder to enforce without oversight. Separately, the UK Maritime Trade Operations reported an attack on a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, with no reported casualties and the fire extinguished.

Separately, in a personal encounter, Shelly Meshel-Yogev, mother of a victim from the Nova music festival massacre, confronted retired Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva, former head of Military Intelligence, during a run. She accused him of failing to visit her and provide answers, stating her daughter's death was partly his fault. Haliva responded that he was unaware of who she was, a claim she rejected.
