UN Panel Accuses US of War Crimes in Iran Attack

The story · English

A special United Nations investigative team has determined that a February 28 attack on a school and sports facility in Iran, which resulted in the deaths of 120 children and 156 people overall, was carried out by the United States and constitutes a war crime. The UN report states that the U.S. relied on intelligence indicating the presence of a senior Iranian military commander at the site but failed to verify this information before launching the attack with an American Tomahawk missile, which caused the school roof to collapse.

The investigative team also examined a second attack on the same day targeting a "clearly identifiable sports complex and residential area" in Lamerd, southern Iran. The panel concluded that there is sufficient evidence to believe the U.S. committed a war crime by launching indiscriminate attacks leading to civilian casualties or damage to civilian objects.

In addition to the U.S. actions, the UN panel also investigated the Iranian regime's crackdown on pre-war protests. The report found that "Iranian authorities committed crimes against humanity during the violent suppression of anti-regime protests."

The findings are set to be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, a body often viewed as hostile towards Israel. The report also implicates Israel in the February 28 attacks, though specific details regarding Israel's role are not elaborated upon in this context.
