מחמוד סעדה, אחד משומרי ראשו של יו"ר הלשכה המדינית לשעבר של חמאס, אסמאעיל הניה, נמנה עם 21 ההרוגים בקריסת בניין א-סעאדה בעיר עזה. גורמים המתנגדים לחמאס טוענים כי קריסת הבניין נגרמה מחפירת מנהרה ותיקה של הארגון מתחתיו, אשר עברה "חידוש" לאחרונה. לטענת מקורות אלו, זו אותה מנהרה שבה חוסלו לאחרונה בכירים נוספים בחמאס, ביניהם ג'מאל א-זבדה, "הפרופסור" האחראי לפיתוח מנועי הרקטות של הארגון, ובאסם עיסא, מפקד חטיבת העיר עזה.
