Global Protests Erupt Over Soaring Fuel Prices Amid War Concerns

מאת תומר אלמגור

The story · English

Massive protests have broken out across the globe in response to rapidly increasing fuel prices, which are threatening political stability in numerous nations. The surge in prices is directly linked to a roughly 50% rise in global oil prices, reaching approximately $108 per barrel, largely attributed to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, and disruptions in key maritime passages. Developing nations in Asia are particularly affected due to their heavy reliance on Middle Eastern energy and existing debt burdens.

Demonstrations have been reported in diverse locations including France, Portugal, Syria, Guatemala, Indonesia, and the Philippines. In France, fishermen blockaded a major fuel depot, while in Portugal, drivers organized protests that disrupted traffic near a refinery. Syrian citizens took to the streets, burning tires and blocking roads to protest a government decision to temporarily increase fuel prices by about 40%.

In Indonesia, taxi drivers protested a new fuel rationing system, and students demonstrated against sharp price hikes. Guatemala saw transport workers and other demonstrators march through the capital, with some protests escalating to car burnings. In the Philippines, bus and taxi drivers protested, and fishermen were unable to work due to fuel costs.

Further contributing to the energy crisis are disruptions in vital shipping lanes. Iran's alleged blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy chokepoint, is impacting tanker traffic. Additionally, Houthi rebels have reportedly imposed a blockade on Saudi Arabia via the Bab el-Mandeb strait, and Iraqi militias have damaged a major oil pipeline, further constricting global supply.
