UN Rights Chief Accuses Israel of War Crimes Amid Gaza Body Recoveries

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has raised serious concerns regarding the recovery of hundreds of bodies from the rubble in the Gaza Strip, suggesting that war crimes may have been committed during the conflict. Türk stated that the discoveries, which include entire families, women, and children, are likely "just the tip of the iceberg."

According to Palestinian civil defense figures cited by Reuters, over 630 bodies and human remains have been recovered since November 2025. Palestinian authorities estimate that more than 8,000 people remain buried under the debris, though these figures cannot be independently verified. Türk accused Israel of extensive destruction in Gaza, noting that demolition and clearing operations continue even in areas where Israeli forces are present, with "no regard for the dead beneath the rubble."

The UN rights chief called for international investigation teams to be allowed access to all parts of Gaza to document sites, preserve evidence, and aid in legal proceedings related to the war. The UN Human Rights Office linked these findings to a 2024 report alleging that Israeli attacks on civilian structures in the early weeks of the war may have violated international humanitarian law.

Israel has previously rejected such reports, arguing they ignore the nature of the conflict, Hamas's use of civilian infrastructure for military purposes, and the IDF's efforts to minimize civilian casualties. Israel's Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, dismissed Türk's statements as "delusional," accusing him of an obsession with Israel that overrides facts and of failing to hold Hamas accountable.

Ajith Sunghai, from the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, also claimed that Israeli restrictions on the entry of equipment, including excavators, heavy machinery, and DNA testing kits, are hindering body recovery and identification efforts. He stated that these cumulative restrictions make systematic, large-scale search and rescue operations nearly impossible, forcing Palestinian teams to dig with their bare hands in some cases.

Israeli authorities have previously explained that some restrictions are intended to prevent dual-use equipment from being repurposed by terrorist organizations for military buildup, such as rebuilding tunnels. The UN estimates that the war has left approximately 61 million tons of rubble in Gaza, with clearance potentially taking seven years. Experts emphasize the need for professional documentation and evidence collection before extensive site clearance.
