UN Demands Gaza Access for War Crimes Investigators Amid Mass Grave Discoveries

The United Nations has called for "unfettered access for international investigators to all of Gaza" to help gather evidence, following the recovery of hundreds of bodies from beneath the rubble of the devastated Palestinian territory. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk stated in a release that "entire families appear to be unearthed from sites flattened by Israeli attacks." He added that "the discovery of many bodies under the rubble in Gaza City brings to the fore concerns about war crimes and other atrocities."

Türk expressed concern that the remains found so far "may represent only a fraction of the total," given that "large parts of Gaza have been leveled by Israeli bombardment or demolition and debris removal operations using heavy machinery and explosives." He noted that "many areas in Gaza, where the Israeli army is present, continue to be leveled by bulldozers, with no regard for the deceased lying under the rubble." To preserve evidence of violations, including at destroyed sites, the UN is urging access to all areas of Gaza.

The High Commissioner's office also recalled that "Israel refuses to allow heavy equipment for debris removal." The Palestinian Civil Defense reported recovering over 630 bodies and additional human remains from destroyed buildings across Gaza between November 2025 and September 2026. The Commission estimates that over 8,000 people remain missing under the rubble.
