IDF Chief of Staff Vows Protection Amid War Crimes Allegations

Following the release of a film alleging severe war crimes by the IDF, Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir addressed soldiers and commanders, stating he had not watched the film and its sources were unknown. He emphasized that the allegations were not presented to the army in advance. Zamir highlighted that since the October 7, 2023, attack, the IDF has been engaged in a complex defensive war against an enemy deliberately entrenched within a dense civilian population.

Zamir clarified that throughout the fighting, the IDF has operated according to the laws of war and the spirit of the IDF, making supreme efforts to minimize harm to innocents and distinguish between Israeli forces and their enemies. He explained that the term "collateral damage" is not pejorative but reflects the army's commitment to striking at those who wish Israel harm while maintaining proportionality.

While open to substantive criticism and self-examinations, Zamir asserted that false and manipulative slander does not constitute legitimate criticism. He concluded his message by offering full backing to the soldiers, stating unequivocally, "You are defending the IDF and the State of Israel, and it will ensure your protection. We will not allow anyone to slander you or cast doubt on your morality."
