IDF Spokesman Defends Chief of Staff Amid Coalition Criticism Over Warning Letter
IDF Spokesman Brigadier General Effi Deferin strongly defended Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir in an interview on Nadav Perry's All In podcast, responding to unprecedented attacks from coalition members. The criticism followed Zamir's warning letter regarding the controversial law freezing the detention of draft evaders. Deferin described some of the criticism as "cheap" and "non-substantive," emphasizing that attacking the Chief of Staff is equivalent to attacking the entire IDF. He explained that the Chief of Staff represents all soldiers, from infantry to tank crews and pilots, and is a professional, non-political institution.
Deferin highlighted the symbolic and institutional role of the Chief of Staff, stating, "If you hurt him, you hurt the soldiers he represents." His remarks come amid sharp calls from coalition MKs, including Likud's Tali Gottlieb demanding Zamir's dismissal and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich accusing him of failing in his duties.
Regarding the warning letter that sparked the controversy, Deferin clarified that Zamir's message was professional and necessary, warning that the law would harm recruitment and violate values of equality. He stressed that the IDF had presented its position on the law for months in the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee before the letter was sent.
Deferin underscored that it is the Chief of Staff's duty to express the IDF's professional stance and rejected claims of political interference. The full interview, which will also address the situation on various combat fronts and issues such as integrating female soldiers, is scheduled for release on Sunday across all platforms.
