Hospital worker who tried to sell Kate Middleton's medical file is barred from the profession

A worker at London Clinic, the private London hospital where Kate Middleton was treated in secret in January 2024, has been fired and stripped of his professional license after a privacy investigation found he tried to access her medical file and offer the information for sale. Britain’s Information Commissioner’s Office, or ICO, called the conduct a “gross breach of trust” and an “abuse of highly sensitive personal information.”

Middleton was admitted for a planned abdominal operation in the Marylebone hospital and remained there for 13 days. During that same period, King Charles was also being treated at the same hospital for an enlarged prostate, during which doctors discovered a form of cancer. While social media was filled with rumors and conspiracy theories about Middleton’s condition, the staff member allegedly chose to snoop on her records.

The case was first reported by the Mirror in March 2024, shocking hospital staff. After a probe that lasted more than two years, the ICO opted for a formal warning rather than bringing a criminal case or issuing a major fine, but the employee was dismissed and barred from the profession.

Middleton would have been entitled to file a civil lawsuit for the privacy violation, but sources said she has no intention of doing so. Three days after the scandal surfaced, she released a personal video saying she had been diagnosed with cancer. London Clinic said this week it was glad the “sad and isolated” incident had ended and stressed that no systemic failings were found. Kensington Palace declined to comment.
