Rabbi Zilberstein Advises on New Year's Resolutions, Sabbath Observance, and Family Roles

Hundreds of married women in the Ramat Elchanan neighborhood of Bnei Brak gathered for a pre-High Holy Days strengthening event. The highlight of the assembly was a question-and-answer session with Rabbi Yitzchak Zilberstein, a prominent halachic authority.

Rabbi Zilberstein emphasized that the most impactful resolution for the upcoming year is diligent Sabbath observance, citing the verse "If I guard the Sabbath, may God guard me" and the commentary of Rabbi Avraham ibn Ezra. He specifically advised attendees to refrain from idle talk on the Sabbath, encouraging instead the sharing of uplifting stories and Torah-related discussions.

Addressing how to foster a High Holy Days atmosphere at home, Rabbi Zilberstein suggested mothers explain the significance of the month of Elul and the concept of divine judgment to their children using phrases like "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine." He also stressed the importance of the husband's role in spiritually supporting his wife, recommending that husbands share inspiring stories from the Torah or their yeshiva studies with their wives daily.

Regarding childcare during High Holy Day prayers, Rabbi Zilberstein proposed a division of responsibility between mothers and older daughters, suggesting they alternate watching the children during prayer services. He concluded by affirming the elevated status of Jewish women, stating that their role is decisive in determining the Jewish identity of their children, countering any perception of female subjugation within religious life.
