From Serums to Scalp Tech: The New Celebrity Hair Regimen

Beauty magazines such as Allure, Vogue and the Journal of Trichology are highlighting a new home hair-care trend built around scalp health, not just shampoos, conditioners or serums. The emerging approach, described as a kind of “biohacking” for hair follicles, centers on scalp oils and at-home laser devices that celebrities have helped popularize.

Beyoncé is presented as the spark for the conversation after revealing she has psoriasis and focuses on “feeding the roots.” In Allure, she was described as using nourishing oils with CBD extract and advanced laser therapy. Other stars, including Gwyneth Paltrow, have also promoted CBD scalp oil, while Jennifer Aniston, Kim Kardashian and Zayn Malik are said to use home laser devices.

The article says CBD oils are now among Hollywood’s most popular scalp treatments because CBD, a non-psychoactive hemp extract, is anti-inflammatory and may stimulate dormant follicles. It notes that until 2024 CBD oil was banned in Israel, and even now it is available locally only with a medical license. A study in the International Journal of Trichology followed 31 people who applied CBD oil twice daily for six months and found an average 93.5% increase in hair growth and less scalp inflammation.

At-home low-level laser therapy, or LLLT, is the other main trend. A study cited in the article found a 39% increase in hair density after 16 weeks of weekly use, three times for 20 minutes, especially in androgenetic hair loss. The article says the strongest results come from combining CBD oil at night with a 10 to 5 minute scalp massage and using a home laser device three to four times a week, with noticeable improvements in a month. Doctors quoted in the piece stress that diagnosis comes first, because hair loss can stem from inflammation, genetics, iron deficiency, thyroid problems or other conditions, and mistreating the scalp can cause harm.
