Soldiers' Parents Demand Emergency Meeting With IDF Chief of Staff Over Trust Crisis

Parents of "Hesder" soldiers in the Givati Brigade's Rotem Battalion have penned a letter to IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, expressing a profound trust crisis with the battalion's command following the imprisonment of their sons. The parents are demanding the immediate release of the soldiers and are calling for an urgent meeting with Zamir, stating, "There can be no reality where soldiers are imprisoned for their just struggle against the trampling of the joint service order."

The letter, titled "Trust Crisis and Command Failure in the Rotem Battalion: Call for Emergency Meeting," asserts that "in the Rotem Battalion, as of now, there is no trust." The parents detailed their sons' service, highlighting their achievements as outstanding soldiers who fought in Lebanon and Gaza, where eight soldiers were wounded, three critically, during their first combat experience. However, they argue that the core issue is not the dispute over a medic entering an armored personnel carrier, but a deeper breakdown of trust between the soldiers and their commanders.

According to the parents, the crisis began earlier, on August 8, when soldiers were allegedly forced to violate Shabbat for a training exercise, with assurances that it was approved by the brigade's rabbinate. The IDF confirmed to Channel 7 that there was no operational necessity for the training on Shabbat and that the brigade rabbi was not informed. The parents claim this incident directly influenced how the soldiers later reacted to the order to allow the medic into the APC, stating, "When the same pattern repeated itself, and the soldiers were asked to violate joint service orders claiming everything was approved by the rabbinate, it is not surprising that they had difficulty trusting things."

The parents strongly criticized the punishments imposed on the soldiers, calling the disciplinary policy a "scandal." They contend that instead of the system taking responsibility for command failures and working to restore trust, it opted for "collective punishment with the full force of the law, imprisonment and ongoing denial of leave." They also alleged that some soldiers were punished for expressing opinions without being present at the event, questioning the legality of these actions.

Furthermore, the parents warned that the affair could have far-reaching consequences for the IDF, potentially impacting thousands of yeshiva students and observant Jews considering military service while maintaining their religious principles. They concluded by placing the responsibility squarely on the Chief of Staff's office, stating, "After the direct command failed at every step, and no longer enjoys our trust, we turn to you, the Commander, and transfer to you the burden of trust and the right to bear it." They expressed full confidence that Zamir would hear their plea, intervene, and ensure justice for their sons, expecting their immediate release and a meeting to discuss restoring trust and preventing further damage to the entire IDF.
