Rotem Battalion Soldiers Report Ongoing Tensions with Commanders

Friends of 15 soldiers from the Rotem Battalion, who were sentenced to ten days in military prison, claim that the recent confrontation involving a medic was part of ongoing friction with company commanders. This friction reportedly includes a training exercise scheduled for the Sabbath, which soldiers argued was unnecessary. The soldiers' supporters revealed a difficult picture of escalating tensions between company commanders and soldiers from the Hesder Yeshiva program. They stated that the incident leading to the soldiers' punishment was not isolated but part of a series of escalating conflicts.

Approximately a week and a half prior, the company commander allegedly decided to hold a training exercise on the Sabbath for evacuating casualties and opening an IV line, despite the soldiers' assertion that there was no operational urgency. The Hesder soldiers reportedly approached their commanders, requesting the exercise be postponed, and questioned the necessity of conducting it on the Sabbath without operational need. They claim they received no substantive answer.

Following the Sabbath exercise, the soldiers reportedly approached the brigade rabbi, who, after hearing the details, stated that such an exercise should not be conducted on the Sabbath if not operationally required. Regarding the recent incident where soldiers refused to board an armored personnel carrier housing a medic, their friends maintain there was no operational activity. They allege the incident was presented to the brigade rabbi as an operational activity, when in reality, it was routine.

"We feel there is a deliberate attempt here to clash with religious soldiers and Hesder Yeshiva students," the soldiers' friends stated. "Instead of finding solutions and enabling shared service based on mutual respect, they repeatedly choose confrontation." They also pointed out the operational cost of these conflicts, noting that the battalion commander has lost 15 soldiers due to imprisonment. "Ultimately, we need to ask who will go into battle with him. In a time when the IDF needs every fighter, it's a shame energy is invested in internal conflicts instead of strengthening cohesion."

The soldiers emphasized their commitment to military service and security missions but expect their commanders to respect their way of life and religious obligations, especially when, according to them, there is no operational necessity justifying the infringement.
