Syria Missed Peace Opportunity With Israel Over Unacceptable Terms

Syria has presented Israel with unacceptable conditions regarding a key aspect of a potential agreement, leading to a breakdown in security cooperation talks. A high-ranking Israeli official stated that the dispute over the future of Israeli troops in a buffer zone was a significant obstacle. Despite this setback, diplomatic contacts with Damascus are ongoing, leaving the door open for future dialogue.

Syria, according to its Foreign Minister Assaad al-Shaybani, remains committed to a diplomatic resolution with Israel, even amidst ongoing Israeli military operations within Syrian territory. Damascus reported 65 Israeli operations in July and 52 in the first 18 days of August. Syrian authorities also claim Israel has detained 147 Syrian citizens this year, with 49 reportedly still in custody.

These developments occur against a backdrop of Israeli concerns over increasing Turkish influence and military presence in Syria. Experts suggest that a purely military response may be insufficient to counter this threat. Previous reports indicated that Turkey had considered establishing a radar and drone base in Syria, potentially followed by air defense systems and troops, though both Syrian and Turkish authorities have denied intentions of creating a permanent base or long-term Turkish presence.
