Thousands of US Sailors and Marines Visit Thailand's Notorious 'Sin City'

תורגם ותומצת מתוך N12 על ידי baba
The story · English

Approximately 5,000 U.S. sailors and Marines from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and its strike group have arrived in the Thai resort city of Pattaya for rest and recuperation after a tense deployment in the Middle East. The ships docked at deep-water facilities near Laem Chabang and the Royal Thai Navy base in Sattahip.

Pattaya, a vibrant tourist destination popular with Israelis, has a troubled history associated with sex work and crime, earning it the nickname "Sin City" of Southeast Asia. The city's connection with U.S. military personnel dates back to the Vietnam War era, when it became a R&R spot for American soldiers stationed in Thailand. This led to the rapid growth of clubs and bars, facilitated by a 1966 law that created legal loopholes for prostitution.

Economic disparities in Thailand also pushed many young people, particularly from impoverished rural areas, into the sex industry to support their families. This established a semi-institutionalized sex industry that became integral to the region's economy and international image. Following the withdrawal of U.S. forces in 1976, Pattaya opened to mass civilian tourism, and in the 1990s, it attracted a wave of immigrants and tourists from Eastern Europe. The city also became a hub for international criminal organizations.

To prevent misconduct, the U.S. Navy has implemented strict oversight, deploying military police to patrol alongside Thai police. Sailors have been reminded of strict military regulations, with U.S. military law prohibiting payment for sexual services and soliciting prostitution, offenses punishable by court-martial. Alongside leisure activities, personnel are also engaged in community service, such as assisting at orphanages and providing medical aid.

Thailand has invested in rebranding Pattaya by developing amusement parks, botanical gardens, golf courses, and luxury malls to attract families. However, the city still exhibits stark contrasts, with its nightlife districts continuing to reflect its complex past.
