Thousands of US Sailors and Marines Visit Thailand's 'Sin City'

תורגם ותומצת מתוך Mako על ידי baba
The story · English

Approximately 5,000 American sailors and Marines from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and its strike group have arrived in the Thai resort city of Pattaya for rest and recuperation after an extended operational deployment in the Middle East. The ships docked at deep-water facilities near Laem Chabang and the Royal Thai Navy base in Sattahip.

Pattaya, a vibrant tourist destination popular with Israelis, has a complex history associated with sex work and crime, earning it the nickname "Sin City" of Southeast Asia. The city's connection to the U.S. military dates back to the Vietnam War era, when it transformed from a quiet fishing village into a R&R hub for American servicemen. This led to the rapid growth of clubs and bars, facilitated by a 1966 law that created loopholes for prostitution.

Economic disparities in Thailand also drove many young people, particularly from impoverished rural areas, into the sex industry to support their families. This established a semi-organized sex industry that became integral to the region's economy and international image. Following the U.S. military withdrawal in 1976, Pattaya opened to mass civilian tourism, and in the 1990s, it attracted a wave of immigrants and tourists from Eastern Europe, further contributing to its reputation and attracting international criminal organizations.

The U.S. Navy has implemented strict measures to prevent misconduct among its personnel during this visit. Military police are patrolling the streets in coordination with Thai police, and sailors have been reminded of strict military laws. According to Article 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, paying for sex and soliciting prostitution are criminal offenses punishable by disciplinary action and court-martial.

In addition to leisure activities, the sailors are participating in community service, including volunteering at orphanages and providing medical aid. Thailand has been investing in changing Pattaya's image by developing amusement parks, botanical gardens, golf courses, and luxury malls to attract families. However, the city still exhibits stark contrasts between its modern attractions and its complex past.
