Shik Keita Emerges as Hapoel Haifa's New Star Midfielder

Hapoel Haifa is witnessing the rise of a new talent in midfielder Shik Keita, a 21-year-old from Mali who has quickly become a crucial player for the Israeli club. Keita's journey to Haifa was unconventional, involving stops in Mali, the United Arab Emirates, and a near-transfer to French club Lille.

Keita's agent, Frank Belhassan, revealed that Lille was close to signing Keita, but financial issues within the club scuttled the deal. Instead, Keita spent two years in the second division of the UAE, gaining experience before seeking a move to Europe. Belhassan, who also represents another Hapoel Haifa player, Chikana Diakite, has a history of successful transfers to the club, including Tiémoko Diarra and Fernan Arboleda, which helped convince Hapoel Haifa to sign Keita.

Despite initial hesitation from the club, Keita impressed during a trial period. Hapoel Haifa officials described him as a "talent bomb" on the field, yet shy and introverted off it. He quickly signed a one-year contract with an option and has since started in several matches, earning praise for his performances, including in games against Maccabi Haifa and Hapoel Be'er Sheva.

Keita's playing style, characterized by his intensity and ball-winning ability, has drawn comparisons to Lucas Ventura, another defensive midfielder. While not primarily an attacking player, Keita's defensive contributions are significant, making him a vital component of Hapoel Haifa's midfield. His agent believes that a full season with Hapoel Haifa will serve as a crucial stepping stone for Keita to reach higher levels in European football.
