Shik Keita Emerges as Hapoel Haifa's Midfield Gem

Shik Keita, a 21-year-old midfielder for Hapoel Haifa, is rapidly establishing himself as a crucial player for the Israeli club. The Malian international, who joined the team as a trialist, has impressed with his stability, presence, and defensive capabilities, drawing comparisons to Lucas Ventura. Keita's journey to Haifa was unconventional, bypassing top European leagues initially.

His agent, Frank Belhassan, revealed that Keita was close to signing with French club Lille, but financial issues at the club derailed the move. Instead, Keita spent two years in the UAE's second division, gaining experience before seeking a European springboard. Belhassan, who also represents fellow Hapoel Haifa player Chicane Diakité, has a history of successful placements with Israeli club, including Tiémoço Diarra and Fernan Mayembo.

Hapoel Haifa was initially hesitant but was convinced by Keita's potential and Belhassan's track record. The club's scouting department quickly identified him as a significant talent despite his background in a less prominent league. Keita signed a one-year contract with an option and has since started in multiple matches, including wins against Maccabi Haifa and Hapoel Be'er Sheva.

Described as a "talent bomb" on the field and a shy, introverted individual off it, Keita is a hard worker beloved by his teammates. His agent believes his time at Hapoel Haifa, playing 25-30 games a season, will be a vital step towards reaching higher European leagues, emphasizing his dedication and appreciation for the opportunity.
