Israeli Man Declares 'State of Achziv' on Coast in Protest

The story · English

In a unique act of protest and self-expression, Eli Avivi, an Israeli citizen, established the "State of Achziv" on a stretch of coastline in the Western Galilee in 1971. This micronation, which lacked official recognition, possessed all the trappings of a sovereign state, including a president (Avivi himself), a flag, a national anthem, passports with entry stamps, and even a constitution. Avivi, an Iranian-born immigrant who served in the Palmach and Palyam, settled in the abandoned Arab village of al-Zib (Achziv) after returning to Israel in 1952. He renovated a structure to serve as his home and, after marrying Rina in 1966, transformed it into a museum of Achziv's history, collecting archaeological finds and hosting visitors. The area was slated for tourism development and the establishment of a national park, leading to the demolition of Avivi's home by bulldozers in 1970. In response, Avivi declared his own state.

The "State of Achziv" became a hub for Israeli and international bohemia, attracting artists, intellectuals, young people, and tourists, functioning as an alternative resort. A large Woodstock-style rock concert was held there in 1972, drawing thousands. Celebrities like Paul Newman, Sophia Loren, and Shimon Peres visited. The micronation's anthem was the "Murmur of the Sea Waves," and its official language was "the language of nature," reflecting its unconventional spirit. Despite its elaborate setup, Achziv was never legally recognized as an independent state by Israel or the international community.

An unusual security incident occurred in 1971 when a six-person terrorist cell infiltrated Israel from Lebanon via the sea, intending to capture Avivi. One infiltrator entered Avivi's home but was apprehended by Rina Avivi, who was armed. Other members of the cell were captured shortly after, making Avivi a participant in a significant regional security event.

Eli Avivi passed away in 2018 at the age of 88, but the "State of Achziv" continues to exist as a museum managed by his widow, Rina. The entrance still signifies entry into a different "country," though today, its playful nature is widely understood. After more than five decades, Achziv has become an integral part of Israeli lore, recognized for Avivi's unique ability to transform a coastal strip into a place treated as a real entity for decades.
