AI Fuels Surge in Elder Scams, Costing Billions Globally

The story · English

Elderly individuals in the United States lost an estimated $7.7 billion to online and phone scams in the past year, a nearly 60% increase from the previous year, according to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center. This dramatic rise is largely attributed to the increasing availability and affordability of artificial intelligence tools, which enable fraudsters to create sophisticated impersonations.

Over 201,000 complaints were filed by individuals aged 60 and above, with an average loss of $38,000 per victim. More than 12,000 victims lost over $100,000 each. Law enforcement officials estimate that fewer than one in 20 victims report these incidents, primarily due to embarrassment, suggesting the true financial impact is significantly higher.

AI voice-cloning technology can now create convincing replicas of family members' voices from just three seconds of audio, amplifying common scams like the "grandchild in distress" ruse. The FBI recorded $893 million in losses explicitly linked to AI in scam reports, with $352 million of that from victims over 60.

Phishing scams have also become more sophisticated, with AI language models eliminating spelling errors and enabling fraudsters to conduct thousands of personalized lure campaigns simultaneously. Investment scams, particularly those involving fake cryptocurrency platforms, accounted for the largest share of losses among older adults, totaling approximately $3.5 billion. Other significant scam categories include tech support fraud ($1 billion), romance scams ($584 million), and impersonation scams targeting government agencies ($413 million).

In Israel, the National Cyber Directorate received approximately 26,500 reports of cyber incidents in the past year, a 55% increase, with phishing being the most common. A recent case revealed fraudsters defrauded about 70 elderly Israelis of roughly one million shekels by impersonating bank service representatives and hijacking mobile phone lines to intercept one-time verification codes.

Security experts advise implementing family code words for emergency calls and adding a trusted contact to elderly relatives' bank accounts for alerts on unusual activity. Creating artificial urgency is a common tactic, and experts stress the importance of pausing and verifying any immediate requests, noting that a minute's delay could save victims an average of $38,000.
